So I started reading books, buying courses and joining masterminds to try and get help. Everyone would have their different spin, tip or trick. This person would do this with their ads. This person presented offers in a special way. This person used this type of a headline to crush it. So I would take what I learned from them and start to piece it all together to figure out what worked for me.

In fact things got really bad and on a cold day in January I remember I was out driving around just doing some random errands on a Saturday. I remember I was so consumed thinking about how I was going to get these campaigns working. Now we had our daughter in university and my wife was just starting a new business and I was stressing out because I still didn’t have consistent clients coming in outside of hustling from one job to going to find another one. And I was on the brink of closing my doors for good.

In remember I was so up in my own head about it that Saturday and I missed my turn off and ended up going 15 minutes out of my way to get where I was going.

It was too much, that night, I noticed this big marketing agency that I followed needed an account rep. I put my tail between my legs, swallowed my pride and made the decision to go work for an agency to figure out how they were making it work. To get the inside information… the stuff that they don’t want to tell anyone about.

Now this was a fast growing agency, they were taking on 2 or 3 new clients every week and charging a handsome fee for their services, like $2-$3 grand a month, so I knew once I got a look at the ad campaigns it would be something special.

The first couple weeks I was literally buried in trying to understand what they were doing. Building clumsy CRM’s with a bunch of automations and not manually checking the results of anything… They were slamming clients in like crazy but doing a horrible job of making sure everything they had promised up front was working or even getting done.. I figured the results must be pretty amazing if they care more about bringing new people in than following up with their clients.

Boy, was I wrong. I finally realized that I knew more about what they were doing than they did. The Facebook campaigns were generating worse results than I had been getting, clients budgets were getting hammered and when I got on the phone with clients all I heard about was complaints of poor leads or not enough leads and I knew right there… that the agency model is not about doing a better job, it’s about selling a big promise and taking clients money for as long as possible… Churn was part of their business model - they expected it and would rather spend more time selling than actually figuring out how to deliver great leads and great results.

That’s when it hit me - these clients could all do better if they just took out the middle man and had direct access to start conversations with people… forget the fancy automations, forget email, sms, CRM’s and lead notifications - they just needed that rock solid way to start new conversations at will.
